Freshwater Fishes of Pakistan: Ecology, Distribution and Threats

Abstract
There are 29,447 fish species reported by the IUCN from around the world. Out of this total, 14,350 freshwater fish species are documented globally. In Pakistan, a total of 196 species of freshwater fish, belonging to 93 genera, 39 families, and 17 orders, are documented. Of the total, 123 species are from Punjab, 122 species are from Sindh, 117 species are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 80 species are from Balochistan, 60 species were noted from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and 16 species were documented from Gilgit-Baltistan. While 31 species are endemic to Pakistan, namely: Barilius naseeri, Garra wanae, Labeo caeruleus, L. gedrosicus, Tariqilabeo macmahoni, Naziritor zhobensis, Puntius waagni, Schizothorax skarduensis, Schistura afasciata, S. anambarensis, S. arifi, S. fascimaculata, S. harnaiensis, S. kohatensis, S. lepidocaulis, S. machensis, S. macrolepis, S. microlabra, S. naseeri, S. prashari, Triplophysa hazaraensis, T. naziri, T. trewavasae, Ompok sindensis, Batasio pakistanicus, Mystus horai, Amblyceps macropterus, Sisor pakistanicus, Gagata pakistanica, Glyptothorax naziri,and G. stocki.
